The 1997 panda coins were stuck in both proof and BU quality. The proof coin did NOT include a “P” mark; however, the proof panda design differed from the BU panda design and it was also colorized so it is easy to know which one is the proof version. This was the first year that the panda coin was colorized. The BU coin had 2 varieties – small and large dates. The large date was issued from the Shenyang mint and the small date from the Shanghai mint. The large date utilized a “plain” 1 while the small date utilized a “serif” style 1.

Mintage was 100,000 BU (50,000 small date and 50,000 large date) and 100,000 Proof.
