Jordan - Part 4: Patterns & Trials

Set Description


There aren't many Jordanian pattern coins, but they are rather rare. These coins fall into one of two groups: (1) gold patterns, and (2) trial patterns.

# Gold Patterns #
In 1968 and in 1975, the Central Bank of Jordan issued souvenir sets that were identical in all characteristics to the circulation coins at the time, with one exception: they were struck on gold planchets. Only 50 sets were minted in 1968, and were issued to commemorate the opening of the new building of the Central Bank of Jordan. In 1975, approximately 110 sets were minted. This set had 7 coins, while the previous set had 6 coins. This is because in the 1975 a ¼ Dinar was also in the set.

# Trial Patterns #
Coins in this group are a variety of test strikes that were done to evaluate the designs, colors, or metals for new coins. Some coins are off-metal strikes (e.g. 1976 or 1980 patterns), others are similar to circulating but with dates that never made it to circulation (e.g. 1995 patterns), while others have a totally new design altogether (e.g. 1998 pattern). In any case, these patterns are either unique or exceedingly rare.

This is Part 4 of 6 in a collection consisting of all Jordanian coins and medals, including Jordan-themed foreign items as well. Part 4 contains all pattern coins minted by the government of Jordan that are known to me.
