Silver Old Timers Assay Commissioners Society MACO Medals

Set Description
Membership in the Old Timers Assay Commissioners Society was limited to those who had the immense privilege of serving as an assay commissioner. From the first meeting in Houston in 1965 to the 25th Anniversary meeting in Pittsburgh in 1989, a commemorative medal was produced. Two metallic varieties were made each year, with the addition of a gold medal in 1989. Most are uniface. A bronze medal, usually looped and hanging from a ribbon bar, was presented to and worn by those who attended the meeting. This was the only way you could obtain the bronze medal. A silver medal was also minted. These were able to be purchased by a member whether or not they were able to attend. All of the medals are difficult to obtain. Most of the silver medals were issued in quantities of less than 100. The final year of 1989 also saw a 10K gold medal struck. Only 11 were made, with one given to the ANA museum.

Set Goals
All 25 of silver and one 10K gold OTACS medals issued. The suspended bronze medals were only available to those who actually attended the meeting. As the certification services do not often encapsulate medals with their ribbons attached, these medals are excluded from this set. This would include all of the bronze medals, and the silver medals from 1971, 1977 and 1980. The 1980 medal was the only one produced by the Franklin Mint. The rest are mostly MACO productions. Complete sets are extremely rare, and no more than 10 can exist given the limited mintage of the gold medal.
