Set Description
I love teaching on Biblical history, this set of coins reflects the passion I have for the Word and for the history it represents. This set also speaks of my love for Israel, her People, and her Story! 'peace and blessing'!

Seleucid Kingdom, Antiochos IV Epiphanes, reigned 175-164 BC. OBV: Radiate head of Antiochos IV right. REV: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY ΘEOY EΠIΦANOY, Apollo walking right, holding bow and reaching for an arrow from quiver on his back. Note, this was the only time in Seleucid history, that a ruler added the legend (ΘEOY EΠIΦANOY)'God Manifest' on their coins. Biblical Sources: Daniel 11:21-24, 1 & 2 Maccabees.

A/PE monogram left above club, TYP (Tyre) monogram surmounted into club, AΣ above date ΓΠP to the right. Fp monogram between legs.

Laureate bust of Melkart right (known to us as Hercules) / Eagle standing left on prow, palm over right wing. Text reads: TYΡOY IEΡAΣ KAI AΣYΛOY, "Tyre the Holy and City of Refuge". Club (hardly visible) and date PZB to left. KP monogram to the right (found only on Tyrian shekels minted after 16/15 BCE, scholars theorize its an acrostic that stood for "By Authority of the Roman Constitution" Biblical references: Matthew 17:24-27 & Matthew 26:14-15

Hasmonean Dynasty, John Hyrcanus I (Yoḥanan Cohen Gadol) under Antiochus VII, reigned 135-104 BC. OBV: Lily ; REV: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY EYEΡΓETOY, with Seleucid anchor. The Lily (Shoshana שושנה in Hebrew), represents Jerusalem, which would become a main symbol of the Maccabee Dynasty. Note: This coin was minted by John Hyrcanus in the name of Antiochus VII after a treaty was signed between them in 131BCE granting Judea automony as a vassal state.

OBV: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Tiberius right; REV: PONTIF MAXIM, Livia, as Pax, holding branch and sceptre, seated right on chair with plain legs. Known as the Biblical "tribute penny", Biblical reference: Matthew 22:19-22. Although this coin was minted during the time of Jesus, it seems only a small amount were circulated in Judaea. The most common denarii found in Israel, are those struck under Augustus (specifically the series with Gaius & Lucius).

Pontius Pilatus, Prefect of Judaea. OBV: TIBEPIOY KAICAPOC, Lituus (augur's wand) / date illegible within wreath. The coins of the infamous Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, reveal his determination to promote the Roman religion in Judaea. Unlike his predecessors, who avoided offending the Jewish people, Pilate deliberately offended Jewish sensibilities with the images on his coins.
