Set Description
In 1913, legendary sculptor James Earle Fraser changed American numismatics forever with the release of the Buffalo Nickel. Featuring an American bison and a composite profile of three Native American chiefs, it was Fraser's thesis on what American coins should be-big, bold, and featuring designs that could only be attributed to the United States of American. But it was no Fraser's only design.
While researching the history of this American classic, experts discovered the original line art for the design-and right next to it was art for two alternate versions, including one that seems to have been favored by Fraser. He even went on to fully realize this alternate design more than 30 years later on a special plaque.
The National Park Foundation has officially authorized the striking of new proofs on the 15th anniversary of the Gold Buffalo series, using images of Fraser's originally plasters to finally bring his Lost Buffalo to life in both gold and silver. Stuck in double-sided Ultra High Relief, these proofs are a collector's dream, and a must-have for any Buffalo Nickel collector.
