It's 2014..... rumor had said a gold half dollar coin was coming out.... and it did!
For Kennedy fans this is a very nice gold proof coin!!! It is on the top of my other Kennedy coins and sits next to my Jaqueline Kennedy gold proof coin.
Finally traded in my PF69 for this handsome PF70!!
The price listed for the 69 or 70 is just too low!! At the current price, the melting amount would be $1455 as of this writing!
This coin shouldn't go below spot price at any rating! NGC needs to make gold price values for these type of coins dynamic!!
The amount minted is less than 70,000 and the coin is 3/4 oz of fine gold!

The coin was designed to commemorate a President that kept us from nuclear war. His death in 1963 was a tragedy to many around the world.
This coin was a starting tribute to his legacy and the only silver coin in its year! It wouldn't be until 1992 that you can get this coin in silver.

200 years our country came to be and everyone was celebrating it.
All though this is a proof coin, I could remember getting a roll of this coins from my mom fresh from her bank she worked at. All us kids got a roll, but we were too young to understand that keeping these coins would be worth something if I didn't open the roll.
But what do you expect from a pre-teen like me that sees money rather than "collectable" if he kept it in the roll.
I see these circulated coins on occasion.... worn.... beaten..... and kids today may ask why they were different.
This coin is a recent addition in 2019. I have a silver version of this one as well.

Seeing this coin minted in silver was actually the best thing the mint did for this year.
Last time a Kennedy half dollar was in silver was in 1964 as a regular circulated coin. Here we have a proof coin in our country's 200 year anniversary of independence!!

Just picked up this coin. Been looking for a DPL at a reasonable price. This replaces my PL coin. I did a comparison between the two and can see by just looking at them that the DPL background was more clear than the PL. Seeing the minute difference help me understand the PL and DPL difference.
Only a 190,000+ minted for this set! Of these only 166 in this rating.... rarity for this coin!

I actually had two of these sets and went through each coin and compared them. I then hand picked the better looking of the two and sent them to NGC. The original coin was rated as SP69, which makes it good coin.
Only a 190,000+ minted for this set! Only 652 rated at this level.

This was the first silver coin that did not have a "S" on it after 1992. A 50th anniversary of the introduction of the JFK half dollar was a good way to put out a coin.
1964 was the year the Half Dollar remembered Kennedy. 50 years later this coin came to be.
This coin I recently picked up to upgrade my collection. I actually had two of these sets and went through each coin and compared them. I then hand picked the better looking of the two and sent them to NGC.
The original coin was rated as SP69, which makes it good, almost perfect coin. But I did find a better coin that is here now.

The coin celebrates the birth of John F Kennedy 100 years ago.
During WWII, the Japanese controlled nearly the entire western Pacific, and they wanted to take what was left. This included the Solomon Islands, which were key to Australia and New Zealand.
In 1943, the crew of Boat PT-109 commanded by Lieutenant Kennedy attempted to patrol the islands until a Japanese Destroyer rammed the boat, cutting it in half on August 2, 1943. A few men died in the incident.
For two days, they stayed on a small abandoned island, living off coconuts and the prospect of a rescue seemed increasingly far. On 5 August, Kennedy, and his colleague George Ross decided to get back into the ocean in search of food and water. On their way to a nearby island, they noticed two people in a canoe, the native Coast watchers based across the Pacific Islands at the time.
One of the men showed Kennedy how to scratch a message on a coconut that proved useful to get a message to a U.S. base for rescue. The message read:
”Nauro ISL Commander… native knows posit… He can pilot…11 alive need a small boat… Kennedy”.
The coast watchers took the coconut and with only their small canoe risked their lives to deliver the message to the nearest base. The next day, John F. Kennedy and the PT-109 crew were rescued.
JFK was awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Medal and this story became a significant part of his biography as he would be decorated even further later in life.
The coin designer is Stevan Stojanovic, a well-known illustrator from the Royal Australian Mint who was inspired by this impressive act of courage.
The obverse depicts the portrait of young John F. Kennedy, boat PT-109, and was inscribed with “1917-2017,” ”ONE DOLLAR,” and “JOHN F. KENNEDY.” The reverse bears the recognizable effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, completed with the inscriptions: “2017,” “SOLOMON ISLANDS,” and “ELIZABETH II.”
This coin contains 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver and has a denomination of $1 dollar. The coin diameter of 40.00 mm and the unique frosted finish allows every coin’s detail to stand out.
This coin looks flawless and has a limited mintage of 15,000 pieces.

This coin was sent in to NCS for restoration. The coin was stored in a PVC pouch originally and had started damaging the details on both sides. NCS did a real good job restoring it.
The coin also has a companion coin for the year 1970 and didn't need restoration.
