Carson City half eagles - complete set

Set Description
This set took about three years to complete with nice examples for the grade. Only 70 to 85 of the key date 1870-CC $5 pieces are known to exist, that means that only 70 to 85 complete sets can exist regardless of grade. There are 7,500 to 9,300 Carson City half eagles extant. The four issues from the 1890's account for 4,800 to 6,000 of them leaving only 2,700 to 3,300 total combined survivors of the 15 remaining dates (1870 to 1884). These are truly scarce and rare coins and in particular, the 1870's issues. As a general rule, Carson City gold coins were not saved by the people of their time; most were heavily used and the majority are bagmarked or very worn. Only a fraction of the total survivors are truly exemplary specimens and those rarities seldom come to market. The few times they do, price barriers are smashed. Most collectors (myself included), often times have to settle for what the available market bears. Lots of patience, finances, and to "be at the right place at the right time" is what is needed to score those rare monster coins; with that in mind, one can appreciate the challenge set forth in building and completing nice sets of CC gold coins (ANY of the 3 denominations). Many thanks to Rusty Goe and team Southgate for making my set possible. Also, thank you to the C4OA (Carson City Coin Collectors of America) club for their continued involment in and the advancement of CC coins and related history. Nothing quite captures the feel of the old west, the "gilded age" (1855-1915) of America like Carson City coins. They are genuine antiques of that special time. It is a personal priviledge to have stewardship of these treasures. Just having a CC coin in my hand conjures up images of the wild west days and those who once possessed and used them in their every day commerce. What tales these coins could tell! Just for fun, I have included a few timeline events for each coin's year in the "Owner Comments" section (click the photo icon). Also, you can click "Gallery" to see a birdseye view of the entire set. I do thank you for viewing and hope you enjoy!

View Coin 1891-CC $5 United States $5 1891 CC NGC MS 61 Rarity: 19 -Original Mintage: 208,000 (the highest of the series) - Known Survivors in all grades: 2,800-3,500. Variety: 1-A - The 1891-CC half eagle is the most available CC mint $5 gold issue by far. Commonly seen in mid AU to lower uncirculated, it is almost never seen in grades below XF. The coin shown here has a dazzling golden-yellow hue with loads of frosty luster and is among the nicest looking examples in my set. It has a very strong strike with superb detail. As mentioned above, it is plentiful in all AU grades and is easily obtainable in lower MS; moderately scarce in MS-63 but very scarce in MS-64; gems remain extremely rare. It is the coin of choice for type set collectors desiring one affordable high grade specimen from the mint on Carson Street. Finest known: PCGS MS-65(1) & NGC MS-65(5). Important 1891 events: Grand finale of Liberty Seated coinage. New era of "Barber" silver coinage to begin in 1892. Wrigley Co. founded in Chicago. Grand opening of Music Hall in NY (now known as Carnegie Hall); Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is opening guest conductor. PLEASE NOTE: OBVERSE SCRATCH ON SLAB, NOT COIN.

View Coin 1893-CC $5 United States $5 1893 CC NGC MS 61 Rarity: 17 (tied with 1890) - Original Mintage: 60,000 - Known Survivors in all grades: 650-900. Variety: 1-A - The 1893-CC half eagle marks the final year of coin production at the Carson City mint. Nice examples are fairly plentiful and easy to obtain. The coin shown here is very similar in appearance to my 1891-CC $5; a frosty, lustrous yellow-gold with a bold strike, and loads of crisp detail. This issue is relatively common in all circulated grades and fairly easy to obtain in lower MS. It becomes scarce in MS-62, rare in MS-63 and very rare in any grades higher. Finest known: NGC MS-65(3). Important 1893 events: Grover Cleveland elected 24th U.S. president (2nd non-consecutive term) and again closes the CC mint, this time forever. Columbian Exposition opens in Chicago where the new amusement invention by Carson City son George W.G. Ferris debuts the Ferris wheel. (His inspiration was Cradlebaugh's water wheel on the Carson river). Rudolph Diesel patents his diesel engine. World's oldest known living person Edna Parker is born on March 20. PLEASE NOTE: OBVERSE & REVERSE SCRATCHES ON SLAB, NOT COIN.
