Set Description

Liberty Bust Standard Silver Type Set - Please Stop Hoarding

My Standard Silver (Liberty Head) type set display the various Obverse and Reverse die combinations struck in 1869 and 1870.

In 1869, the mint had prepared a plan in minting silver coins consisting of 90% Sil and 10% Copper that would also be slightly smaller & lighter. The concept was to reduce the urge for hoarding these pieces while finding a way to displace the use of fractional currency notes still in use. These pieces are called STANARD SILVER

The STANADRD SILVER patterns were so inscribed and it was intended that these would be their own class of coinage to become a standard currency. Each of the 3 denominations ( 10c, 25c and 50c pieces) were developed.

In 1869 there were 3 distinctive obverse dies that were married with a common theme reverse design that consisted of an open Laurel and Oak wreath with the denomination in the center and “STANDRAD SILVER” prominently displayed at the top and the date outside and at the bottom of the wreath. 2 stars were added to the 50 Cents reverse.

The 50 Cent obverse was slightly different as the Phrygian Cap had only 2 stars decorated the cap, the word Liberty was inscribed on the ribbon and a “B” (for Charles Barber) was in the fold below the Cap.

The mint, for what ever reason elected to strike these patterns in each Silver, Copper and Aluminum and combining those with a Plain or Reeded edge creating at least 6 samples of each denomination. There were several unique 50 c examples struck in brass.

There is one sample of the 50 Cent pattern that is currently consider an R.8 (J-742a) that I have in my collection. It was struck in silver but unique as the initial “B” on the obverse was omitted. This die design would be used again in 1870.. Belive only 2 or 3 examples of this 1869 die per USPattern.com.

In 1870, the mint continue to strike these Liberty Head Standard Silver patterns but one additional reverse was prepared for each of the 3 denominations. This new reverse featured moving the date to within the wreath that was composed of corn and wheat. The same 3 obverses designs as used in 1869 were used in 1970.
A couple of variations are noted specifically on the 50c pieces where LIBERTY can be found in both raised letters (J945&J972) and Incused Letters (J939 & J964) & the j977 with raised letters and the initial "B" . The reverses were of the same open Laurel and Oak wreath however the date was now within the wreath and only the word STANDARD appear at the top.

Set Goals

Focus on collecting a type set of the various combination of the Obverse and reverse dies of the 1869 - 1870 Standard Silver Patterns independent of the alloys and edge type of the coins.

This set shown is a sample of my sets to date ... please view the Gallery to see all the sets in each denomination for each year of 1869 and 1870,

USPatterns.com states "less than a dozen are known." This rose-red pattern is well struck except on the EN in CENTS, opposite the highest portion of the high-relief bust. Reverse: A wreath of laurel and oak encircles the denomination 50 CENTS with the inscription STANDARD SILVER around and the date 1869 is outside and below the wreath bounded with 2 STARS

Comment:
About three examples are known, according to USPatterns.com.
"There are actually 2 dies like this . The first is the die of 1869 with point of crown under the letter 'E'. and the other is the 1870 examples with point of crown under the letter 'S'."

Also Pollock notes that the Bottom of the curls are further away from the tip of the scroll - this helps with researching older photos of auction catalogs where low resolution of B&W photos makes it hard to see the "B"

This piece is lightly toned with a typical strike and there is a faint curved pin-scratch left of the 1 in the date. The right obverse field is lightly hairlined.

USpatterns.com noted with about 3 or 4 are known that included the Morris Evans-B/M 8/98 (PF58)/ Lot #2056, Heritage 1/07 (PCGS64) /lot #1404 and Heritage 8/15 (PCGS60)/ lot #5991 and it appeared again in Heritage 6/17 (PCGS60)/ lot #4680 sales. Also not mentioned was Superior Jun 1999 (Pre Long Beach) PCGS61 / LOT #3196 which does not appear to be neither the PF58 or the PR60’s noted above. It appear to me that at least 5 pieces are known
