OBVERSE: Above is the small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine). In the center of the coin, within the octagonal cartouche, there is depicted a shield with the emblem of the National Bank of Ukraine thereon. The emblem has allegorical figures of griffins on the left and right of the shield with the hryvnia (monetary – weight unit of Kyivan Rus) placed between them. This emblem symbolizes safeguarding and augmentation of the country’s gold reserves. At the bottom, between the rim and cartouche is inscribed ОΔНА ΓРИΒΗЯ (one hryvnia) the coins denomination. Below the shield is the year of issue, to the left between the rim and cartouche is the metal and fineness and to the right between the rim and cartouche is the coins weight in fineness (which is incorrect, actual fineness is .925), at the bottom between the cartouche and denomination is the logotype of the National Bank of Ukraine Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
REVERSE: In the center is depicted the Taxiarch Archangel Michael. Running around the rim is the circular inscription …ЗА НАС І ΔУШІ ПРАΒЕΔНИХ, І СИΛА АРХІСΤРАΤИΓА ΜИХАΪΛА (FOR US AND SOULS OF RIGHTEOUS MEN, AND ARCHISTRATEGOS MICHAEL’S STRENGTH) lines from Taras Shevchenko’s epic poem Haydamaks’.
NOTES: This is a mint error/variety of the 2016 coin, the total number struck on .925 planchets is unknown. To date there are currently 40 graded by NGC. As the coin itself is minted with the fineness displayed as 999.9 instead of .925, I would tend to classify this as an error rather than a variety.
All of these were sold through APMEX, with one batch being submitted in '16 or '17 and a second batch submitted a few years later.
The silver Archangel bullion coins are distributed/sold in 20 coin boxes direct from the NBU to authorized distributers. With a total of 40 graded by NGC, all submitted by one customer, one could assume that these were most likely grouped together when minted and distributed as opposed to being scattered throughout the entire mintage.
