PCGS PF 66 CAMEO
|
PCGS graded PR 66 Cam Variety: Restrike - This silver coin was struck with the dies used to create the 1863-dated Judd 323 (copper) and Judd 324 (aluminum) "patterns", which were struck around 1871.
At a 2018 Baltimore Expo, I showed this coin to a prominent Liberty Seated dealer, who suggested I ask John Dannreuther about it. At the time, he said he believed it to be a regular 1863 proof, but reserved the right to change his mind. At the Seated Fest II (March 2019 Baltimore Expo), where I had it on display, he looked at it again and was more comfortable with the idea of it being a restrike.

This coin appeared in the Heritage auction associated with the 2017 FUN show. I purchased it as an upgrade to an NGC PF 64 Cameo. When I compared the two coins closely, it became apparent that they were produced from different obverse dies. (The date is farther left on this coin.) There is no mention of multiple proof varieties for 1871 in the available literature. Another member of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, after seeing my post about this on the club's chat boards, took it upon himself to check 15 other 1871 proofs in the Heritage archives. He found that all 15 are like my other one. Thus, so far, this is the only one known produced from its obverse die.

This is a nice PF64. It is mostly well struck, but has slight weakness in the upper left wreath, where so many coins of this design are weak. There are some hairlines, but the reverse toning is quite attractive.
