Since the Great Decimalization of 1971, the pound has been divided into 100 pence, just like the dollar is split into 100 cents. The 8 coins circulating are the £2, £1, 50 pence (p), 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1 penny.

9. Britannia

Britannia is considered the female personification of Britain, symbolizing its ideals and values throughout history. Britannia has appeared on British coinage since 1672, although the Romans were the first to portray her on their coins. Ancient Roman coins depicted Britannia as a fragile and brooding figure, however, over the centuries Britannia has developed into a ‘warrior queen,’ wearing a Corinthians hat, wielding a shield and trident, as symbols of protection and security.

A First-Ever One-Ounce Silver Britannia Proof

The image of Britannia as an icon of Great Britain has a long and storied history. She first appeared on Roman coins struck over 1,800 years ago! For over 300 years, this image has graced British coins much like “Lady Liberty” graces ours.

But Britannia took on a new form for the 2013 One-Ounce Silver Britannia Proof, and it’s spectacular! For the first time they struck her in 99.9% fine silver. She’s the purest and largest silver Britannia ever struck by the Royal Mint! To celebrate these milestones, the mint redesigned the reverse of the coin. Britannia is shown seated holding her trident with an owl of wisdom perched on her knee in a design harkening back to her image used on ancient Roman coins.

This coin is graded perfect Proof-70 (PF70) First Releases by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
