Set Description

On January 18 1871 King Wilhelm of Prussia became crowned at Versailles as the Emperor (or Kaiser) of German Empire. This happened in the event of victorious conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and the following unification of the German land under one Ruler. That time German Empire spreaded on 22 german states, 3 free cities as well as Alsace- Lorrane Territory. Old monetary system that time was abandoned towards gold standard and the mark as the unit of coinage. In 1874 the new 5 Mark silver coinage began. Those fascinating large silver coins considered the highlight of the period from 1874 to 1915. Each coin was made from 0.9000 Silver and had weight 27.7770 g with 0.8037 ASW. The reverse of the coin had crowned imperial German eagle and the obverse reflected current Ruler of the particular state or the Arms of the Free City. On the edge the coin has the motto "GOTT MIT UNS" (God with us).
