The 1982 Washington commemorative silver half dollar was issued to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birthday of our first U.S. President George Washington. The obverse and reverse sides of the coin were designed by Elizabeth Jones, the chief sculptor and engraver of the United States at the time. It was the first commemorative coin issued by the U.S. Mint that featured unique obverse and reverse designs since 1954.
These 90% silver, 10% copper half dollar coins were available in both uncirculated and proof coins and sold by the U.S. Mint to coin collectors. Uncirculated coins were issued at the Denver Mint and proof coins were produced in San Francisco.
