As a result of the U.S. victory in the Spanish-American war, the Philippines were sold to the U.S. in 1898. The Islands remained under U.S. control until gaining independence on July 4 1946. This particular piece was minted in San Francisco although the holder erroneously identifies it as a much rarer Philadelphia issue. I double-checked my invoice and I DID identify the coin as SF so I guess I better take a close look to verify the mintmark.
