Owner Comments:

The 1877-S quarter can be found with two different reverses and two different sized mintmarks. This coin has the type 2 reverse with a small "S" mintmark. The type 1 reverse has the letters "TATE" of "STATES" touching each other at the base of each letter. The type 2 reverse has the letters separated at their bases. The small "S" mintmark on this coin was made by the punch intended for use on dimes, not quarters. The mintages of 1875 - 1877 quarters were unusually large and were used to retire 25c fractionally currency notes. Even with the large mintage, quarters with the type 2 reverse and small mintmark are scarce. Ex. Eric P. Newman collection.
