Owner Comments:

This is an interesting Civil War era U.S. gold coin. At first Union tried to finance their war effort in gold but soon found that that was not possible. As a result the mintages for all 1861 gold coins, except the three dollar gold piece, were high.

The reverse of this gold dollar is rotated by almost 180 degrees. It has been estimated 1 in 20 of the surviving 1861 gold dollars have this feature. Given that perhaps 9,000 of these coins have survived, that would result in an estimated population of 450 pieces.
