After WWII the Koreans saw their country divided into North Korea and South Korea. 1950, North Korea invaded the South, and the Korean Conflict began. It lasted until 1953, and an armistice was recognized. During the time of war, many battles were fought for Seoul, and the city was nearly destroyed. Park Chung Hee controlled the country from 1961 until his death in 1979. His vision called for many industries to be built in Seoul, resulting in many factories and skyscrapers.

The 1988 Seoul Olympic authorized mintage was 10 million pieces, but it never came close to a sell out. The final mintage was approximately 1.55 million pieces. Uncirculated strikes were minted at the Denver Miint. Theproof coins carried the "S" mintmark and were struck at the San Francisco Mint. A proof and uncirculated two coin set containing a $5 gold and $1 silver pieces. and a set with all four versions.
