The White House was once referred to by Harry S. Truman as a "glamorous prison". President George Washington ordered the construction of the White House, but never lived in it. It was burned by the British in the war of 1812.
INTERESTING TIDBIT: Running water and central heating were not installed in the White House until 1835 and electric lights were added in 1891.
The Whitehouse has 132 rooms on 6 floors served by 3 elevators. It has 412 doors and 147 windows. It has 28 fireplaces,7 staircases and a whopping 35 bathrooms.
It was given its name officially in 1901 by President Teddy Roosevelt. Over the years it ha been called the "Executive Mansion," :the Presidents house," and least like "Presidents Palace."

The 200th anniversary of the White House marked the occasion to release a 1992 White House Commemorative Silver Dollar. Oct 13, 1792 was when the cornerstone was originally placed. The building became the presidential residence officially on November 13, 1792.
