Owner Comments:
Although the 1854 Type I is considered to be a common coin, it is, next to the much scarcer 1850, the scarcest Philadelphia mint issue in the Type I series. It is decidedly scarcer than the really common dates, 1852 and 1853, and also tougher to find in Choice Mint State than the 1849 No L and 1849 open wreath coins.
The last delivery of the Type I gold dollars occurred on June 17, 1854. After that the mint replaced the small gold dollars with ill-fated Type II gold dollars which had the same weight, but a larger diameter. The coin shown above is an attractive example for the MS-63 grade.
