THE STORY: 1976

Gerald Ford was the President of the United States.
Nelson A. Rockefeller was the Vice President of the United States.

Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan shared the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for the peace efforts in Northern Ireland.

This was last half of my junior year and first half of my senior year in high school. I was still competing in speech and debate, drama, and working about 20 hours a week at a local drug store. There was a sense of new found freedom that came with my driver’s license. When I wasn’t in school, I was hunting and fishing depending on the season or at the ballpark watching our local minor league team, the Holyoke Millers. Of course the start of my senior year of high school in the fall also meant that the search for colleges began in earnest.

1976 was the Bicentennial year for the United States. The entire Nation celebrated its 200th birthday. It was also an election year and in November, Jimmy Carter, Governor of Georgia, defied the odds and won the Presidential election. The nation was also fighting what was termed “Hyper-Inflation”. Legionaries’ Disease claimed 29 lives at a convention in Philadelphia. The Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty was not inherently cruel and unusual punishment. The world lost some notable historic figures in 1976. The short list includes Benjamin Britten (Composer), Busby Burkley (choreographer/director), Howard Hughes (financier), Jean Paul Getty (financier), Rosalind Russell (actress) and Agatha Christie (author).

An interesting numismatic piece of news was the death of Louis Eliasberg in February 1976. In 1950, he was the only known person to have completed a collection of all known United States coins by date and mint mark.

The Cincinnati Reds swept New York Yankees to win the World Series.
The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl defeating the Dallas Cowboys.
The Montreal Canadians won the Stanley Cup sweeping the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship 4 games to 2 over Phoenix Suns.
The University of Indiana defeated University of Michigan to win the NCAA Basketball Championship.
