Owner Comments:

With a mintage of 4,763,the 1909 Proof Liberty Nickel has the highest mintage in the series. The reason for the this bumper crop of Proof nickels is interesting. During this period the Proof cent and nickel, Proof silver coins and Proof gold coins were sold as sets. In 1909 there were three types of cents, the Indian cent, the Lincoln cent with "VDB" on the reverse and the Lincoln cent without the VDB. The combined Proof mintage for the Indian and the 1909 Plain cents was 4,793, which is very close to that of the nickel. This indicates that a fair number of collectors ordered additional cent and nickel Proof packages in order to get the new cents as they were issued.
