Owner Comments:

The Grandview Collection contains two 1878-CC doubles eagles, an NGC VF35 CAC (cert # 1738826-001) and PCGS AU50 CAC (cert # 35465050). The higher graded coin is shown in the images. This AU50 double eagle represents what I consider a "perfect" circulated double eagle. It is difficult to find this issue properly graded with original surfaces. This coin is from the "Fairmont" collection.
The Fairmont collection is a hoard of eagles and double eagles sourced from a European bank. The coins have been off the market for 75 to 125 years before being sold by Stack’s Bowers in a series of auctions staring in June 2018. During storage, the coins acquired attractive toning rather than the dirt and grime found on coins from other overseas holdings. The Fairmont collection is a 100 + year old time capsule showing the state of preservation of large US gold coins at the turn of the twentieth century.
