Owner Comments:

In the United States in 1815/ February 6 , New Jersey grants the first American railroad charter to a John Stevens./ Due to the War of 1812 there had been much hording of both Gold and Silver coins, and in fact many Americens refused to except paper money. As a result the Mint had no silver deposits. The mint director ordered an 1812 obverse die from die storage, and a 5 was stamped over the 2. Due to the silver shortage the entire mintage was delivered on January 10, 1816 just one day before the Mint burned. The resulting fire meant that no half dollars were minted in 1816.
