Owner Comments:
There are two major changes to this “Type 2” MS-63, 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter over the “Type 1”. The first change covers Lady Liberty’s right breast with a coat of mail and contrary to the popular belief, did not come as the result of a public outcry. Nevertheless, I am sure that a portion of the American public found the “Type 1” Standing Liberty Quarter rather offensive. The other change is on the reverse of the “Type 2” Standing Liberty Quarter and places the eagle towards the center of the coin with three of the 13 stars underneath its breast. This design change gives the impression of the eagle flying higher. The impetus for both these changes came primarily from the Standing Liberty Quarters’ designer, Hermon A. Macneil, as evidenced by his letters written to US Mint officials complaining about “artistic” discrepancies on the coin. The Standing Liberty Quarter, much like our other coins, is illustrative of our nation’s values. Over the course of our nation’s history, we have held a steadfast belief in God as expressed on our coinage with the motto “In God We Trust”. We have always believed that when our cause is just, God is with us. That belief stands out in the symbolism of the Standing Liberty Quarter. The wall on the obverse of the coin with 13 stars around the gate signifies our nation. The motto “In God We Trust” written across the wall represents the wall’s foundation and strength. With God to protect us, the wall becomes impenetrable to our foes and the gateway guarded by Lady Liberty is open to all who love freedom and peace.
