Owner Comments:

1901-S VAM-2 NGC MS62 DPLThis is one of my favorite DMPL acquisitions, despite the grade just below choice. 1901-S is excessively rare in prooflike state, and prohibitive with deep mirrors. This specimen has the typical, characteristic flat strike and lateral striations and is moderately toned, probably limiting the grade even though they are natural. I also have one in an ANACS cache (MS61 PL) with less appeal but an uncommonly full strike. The score here is insanely low considering the true rarity of this coin. NGC has only graded 4 DMPLs total: one at MS60, two at this level and one at MS64, a population that has remained static for many years. It is even likely that the other MS62DPL is the same coin as resubmissions from crack-outs without tag returns was a very common practice years ago especially for ultrararities with enormous price potential on upgrades. In 20 years, I do not recall having seen another 1901-S DMPL appear for auction or sale anywhere. They are all likely in very stable specialist cabinets and, as I mentioned, the other MS62 DPL is possibly a double count of my coin. This is exceedingly R-A-R-E.Acquired 10/16/1995, Teletrade Auction #780, Lot #772.Prooflike Condition Census (date): 1 x 66DM(P), 2 x 65PL(P), 1 65PL(N), 1 x 64DM(P), 1 x 64DM(N), 4 x 64PL(P), 5 x 64PL(N), 2 x 63DM(P), 6 x 63PL(P), 8 x 63PL(N), 1 x 62DM(P), 2 x 62DM(N), 6 x 62PL(P), 10x 62PL(N)DMPL COndition Census (date): 1 x 66DM(P), 1 x 64DM(P), 1 x 64DM(N), 2 x 63DM(P), 1 x 62DM(P), 2 x 62DM(N), 1 x 60DM(N)
