Mintage: 29.4 Million
Full Step Availability: 0.033%
Date/mm Information: Like the 53-S, lustrous examples are available but full steps are almost non existent as this date/mm is the worst struck of the entire series.
Coin Description:
An incredibly attractive example of this conditionally rare issue. A remarkable patina of peach, sunshine yellow, powder blue, lavender, and iridescent cobalt blue drapes both sides of this satin luster premium gem with a decent strike for a normally mushy year. With a scant population less than 25, finding a more eye appealing example of this date/mm will be very challenging indeed.
Comments:
I will go out on a limb and state that this is the most eye appealing 1954-S in existence. Furthermore, the coin is certainly deserving of the star designation. Nickels of this date/mm simply dont look like this. If you dont believe me, check the Heritage auction archives and look for yourself. Remember to include MS66 coins or you will only have a few hideous MS67 to view. I purchased this coin at 2X Numismedia wholesale in a Teletrade auction in August of 2009. My max bid was 5X wholesale.
