1860 NGC PROOF 68 CAMEO. In 1860, the Mint struck a round 1,000 proofs for the quarter issue, a figure that would remain tied for the highest such mintage for the denomination until 1876. Yet examples remain elusive in the numismatic marketplace today, particularly with strong eye appeal. Likely, a number of them went unsold and were melted.
The magnificent specimen offered here has not merely survived for over a century. Its magnificent preservation bespeaks careful custodianship, and the coin's bold definition and vibrant patina combine for amazing eye appeal. Among pieces without the Cameo designation, this is the single finest certified by NGC. Only 10 cameos exist, one in 67, the others much lower.
