Owner Comments:
Chief Mint Engraver, Robert Scott was never one of John Reich’s fans. Reich worked at the mint for almost a decade and during that time he never got a raise or a promotion.
In 1816 Scott replaced Reich’s Classic Head cent design with the Matron Head, which was one of Scott’s creations. I might not be a great judge of beauty, but I think this design was a step backward from the esthetic point of view.
This coin has perfect chocolate brown color, a few light marks. It is a Newcomb 10 with the distinctive circular die break through the stars. This is one of the Randle Hoard coins, and it is quite common for a coin from this era.
My wife gave this coin to me as a wedding present, and the piece a special place in my collection. My wife is whole lot better looking than the matron who appears on this piece.
