1951 50C Booker T. Washington MS68 NGC. This commemorative half dollar was minted to honor one of America's best known black educators, Booker Taliaferro Washington, who was born about 1858 in Franklin County, Virginia. The obverse shows a design of Washington prepared by the black artist Isaac Scott Hathaway. The reverse illustrates the log cabin in which Booker T. was born, and the Hall of Fame at New York University where a bust of Washington was enshrined. These two motifs are separated by the words FROM SLAVE CABIN TO HALL OF FAME.This specimen has speckled green, gold, lavender, and violet patina overlying highly lustrous surfaces. The design elements are exquisitely struck, with no areas displaying hints of softness. This is the finest known specimen certified by either NGC or PCGS. FYI, there are only 8 68's in the whole series of BTW's and Washington Carver's combined. This is the only 68 51 BTW known to date.
