NGC US Coin Census for Early Quarters (1796-1838)

Owner Comments:

In 1807 John Reich was hired as a die engraver at the first Philadelphia mint. His assignment was to re-design all of the coins that were then in circulation. Oddly enough the mint did not issue any quarters from 1808 until 1815. That year Reich was able to adapt his Capped Bust design to the denomination.

Unlike today, half dollar mintages were the FAR higher than those for the quarter. As a result all of the early quarter dates from 1815 to 1828 are scarce. After a three year hiatus the mint resumed production of the quarter, but the new coins would be struck in a close collar with a modified design.

The coin in my set is a very pleasant AU-58. The surfaces are smooth, and the overall appearance is pleasing for this type.
