Owner Comments:

In 1831 the new, more modern minting methods that had been adapted for the half dime and dime were brought into play for the twenty-five cent piece. The new quarter had a smaller diameter (from 27 mm to 24.3 mm), but weighed the same.

In recent years numismatists have debated the concept of the “open” versus “closed” collar. Where the earlier quarters struck in a collar that imparted the reeded edge on the coins, or was the reeded imparted by a separate operation? A majority of collectors now think that the closed collar was used earlier than some previously thought. At any rate the Reduced Size (diameter) quarter did represent a step forward in coin production for the U.S. mint.

The present example was dipped at one point, but it has Mint State sharpness and considerable eye appeal.
