Central States, May 2007-------------1946-S 50C Booker T. Washington MS68 NGC. Charles Keck was a noted, if infrequent, contributor to American commemorative coinage, with design credits that include the 1915-S Panama-Pacific gold dollar, the 1927 Vermont half, and the 1936 Lynchburg half. Keck would have contributed in the 1940s as well, though Isaac Scott Hathaway's designs supplanted Keck's rendition of the Booker T. Washington half. The finest examples of this issue frequently possess incredible eye appeal; of the four pieces graded MS68 by NGC, three received the Star designation (4/07). The coin offered here is one representative of that unsurpassed troika. Warm green-gold and orange patina with a hint of violet covers each side, with slightly deeper color on the obverse. Washington's portrait displays above-average definition, though slight incompleteness (as always) is noted at the highpoints. A grand example of this later classic commemorative. From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.
