Owner Comments:
Shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the mint started to work on a new coin to pay tribute to our late President. The half-dollar denomination was choosen and Benjamin Franklin had to give way for this change and the production of this new coin was started in 1964. The observer of this coin shows a simply bust of President JFK, and the reverse is based on the Presidential Seal - a shield eagle holding 13 arrows and 13 olive branch enclosed with 50 stars (I think only a coin with this size can accomodate this.) This circulated coin was originally issed with 90% silver in 1964, 40% silver until 1971, and then to cupro-nickel altogether. This denomination is still the larest circularting coin measuring 1.205 inches in diameter. I include this 2005-S Silver Half Dollar in my 21st Century Proof Type Set which was graded by NGC as PF70 UC and was purchased in June 2008.
