Owner Comments:
Two varieties of half eagles were struck by the Charlotte Mint in 1852. About 85 to 90 percent are variety I coins and can be easily identified by the first numeral touching the bust. This is the rare variety II where there is a small gap between the top of the "1" and the bust. This coin is housed in a first generation 1987 holder and would now grade probably 5 points higher based on today's less stringent grading standards.
