With a mintage of only 4,000 pieces, the 1882 Quarter Eagle is a scarce coin. This date, in all grades, has appeared at auction only 15 times in the past 5 years. Apparently the low mintage was recognized early on and the coin was saved in significant numbers. About 8% of the total mintage still survives as compared to less then 2% for many of the common gold issues.
