This is the first US nickel 5 cent piece to be struck outside of Philadelphia. The honor for being the first minor coin (not made of silver or gold) to be struck outside of the main mint in Philadelphia goes to the 1909-S Indian Cent. The 1912-S Liberty Nickel was struck for 4 days starting on December 24 1912. This, 1912-D, coin is typically found with a weak strike as shown on the corn ear to the left of the ribbon on the reverse. In my opinion this coin is consistent with its reputation for being weakly struck and has about a grade "B" strike. I can only identify a few, if any, kernels of corn on the left ear. This coin, in my opinion, is significantly nicer that the next coin in the set (the 1912-S) of the same grade. The later coin was graded by PCGS rather than NGC. The pictures show a finer surface on the "D" than the 1912 S. Overall this is a solid coin for the somewhat underrated issue of 1912 D nickels.
