Mintage for this coin was 26,100 pieces. This year marked the final year of a run from 1857 to 1878 of tiny mintages for $10 Gold pieces from the San Francisco mint. All San Francisco 1878 eagles have a very tiny mintmark. These coins circulated heavily on the west coast and very few survive in uncirculated condition. AU coins are very scarce and mint state examples are nearly impossible to find.
