Owner Comments:

The first example of the Charlotte gold dollar, struck in June of 1849. The early production run was not of suffcient quality, and director Patterson of the US Mint in Philadelphia sent new dies (of the closed wreath design) as part of the solution. Only five pieces exist of this ultra rarity. Pedigree: Elrod
