Like the 1897-S Morgan, the 1898-S is relatively easy to find in all Mint State grades through Gem MS65. Even those that grade MS66 are rather plentiful. However, Superb Gem examples are extremely hard to find. Many surviving examples of this issue have moderate to heavy abrasions, and they are often quite softly struck. Quite a bit of searching is necessary to find a Gem Mint State piece that is also sharply struck. So here is a candidate for careful scrutiny. Dave Bowers writes: "It will pay you to be picky when buying one of this date."
