2007-W Burnished Silver Eagle - Mintage: 690,891
Elsie Viola Kachel and the lawyer/poet Wallace Stevens were married in 1909 and sometime thereafter, they moved into an apartment in a brownstone on New York's lower west side. The building was owned by a German-born sculptor named Adolph Weinman. Weinman had a rooftop studio and asked Elsie to model for him around 1913. She was 27 at the time, and if my calculations are correct, that means she would have been born in 1886. It seems quite fitting then that Weinman's beautiful half dollar design was resurrected exactly 100 years later for the American Silver Eagle.

2007 was the second year that the U.S. Mint released the burnished Silver Eagle, which involves an extra step in the preparation of the planchets. 2007 was also the final year of the original Silver Eagle reverse design. Some minor changes were made to the Silver Eagle hub in 2008. This is most easily seen with the addition of a tail on the "U" in "UNITED" on the reverse of the coin. As you can see, the 2007 coin above does not have that tail.

I had the opportunity to pick up this coin in the NGC Retro Black holder for a reasonable price, so I grabbed it. This coin is not rare, so it was nice to get it in MS70.
