Owner Comments:

1892-O NGC MS64DPL VAM-8An amazing coin. There are only a handful of prooflikes for the date. But among them are perhaps only a few that have anywhere close to this full of a strike. The centers are typically flat on 1892-O dollars as well as, sometimes, the rims. This one has a full strike with only the slightest weakness above the ear. The eagle's breast feathers are well presented. It is a fine and very dramatic cameo with nice light and even device and rim toning. The mirror depth exceeds 12 inches. This coin is a VAM-8. The ear does exhibit some minor doubling, but the coin is not the Top-100 VAM-7 I had originally thought. It is tied with one other for the finest certified by NGC. (Perhaps the same coin?) PCGS has certified two gem DMPLs, one being the Dean Tavenner specimen (imaged in Wayne Miller's book, page 134), last crossing the auction block I believe when Wayne Miller's set was broken up, and the other is in PCGS holder #1156043 (imaged in John Highfill's book, page 1053).With the exception of a staple scratch by the chin, some nicks above the second star to the right of the date and a small nick on the chin, this is pretty much unimprovable. It certainly gives the Tavenner piece a fair run in eye appeal. The characteristics that are contrary to everything you think of in an 1892-O dollar make this a true pleasure to own and a centerpiece in the set.
