Owner Comments:

The 1984 Olympics were awarded to Los Angeles due to the fact that Iran declining a bid because of changing political and social changes. Los Angeles was awarded it by default really. This was the second time for Los Angeles to host an Olympic Games.
Because of the United states boycott in 1980 Moscow, 14 Eastern Bloc nations, Iran, and Libya boycotted the 84 L.A. games. Even with the boycott, the LA Olympics had a record 140 participating countries. Because of extreme expenses involved in hosting an Olympics, LA used existing venues, except for having to build a velodrome and Olympic swimming venue. These were paid for by using sponsorship monies to help the budget. The LA84 Foundation was formed to promote youth sports in southern California, and the excess monies were donated to this group.
The 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games were considered the most financially successful of the modern era.
The Olympic torch relay began in New York, and covered 33 states and the District of Columbia. The torch, unlike later relays was carried exclusively by runners on foot. It covered over 9,320 miles, 3,636 runners. There was notable carriers of the torch in the likes of Gina Hemphill, granddaughter of Jesse Owens, Rafer Johnson, and O.J. Simpson.
A unique opening to the ceremonies was Bill Sutor by use of a Bell Aerosystems Rocket jet pack.
Marylou Retton was the first gymnast to win an all around gold medal outside the Eastern Europe. And the mens gymnastics won the Gold Medal.
