Owner Comments:

Per cataloger, "1809 O-109a Capped Bust Half, MS66+. Full Strike, Impeccable Surfaces. Finest Known for the VarietyThe Mint experimented with edge devices in 1809, creating the III edge and the XXX edge. The III feature appears as numerous vertical edge marks that resemble edge reeds, except they are unevenly spaced. The O-109 variety is generally found with the III edge, and other varieties with that edge are O-107, 109, and 111. This splendid Bust half is the O-109a variety, a later die state of the O-109. It is easily identified by a heavy die crack through AMERICA, with clashed dentils behind those letters and down to the arrowheads, with parts of other letters clashed and appearing between MERI. Awarded the Plus designation by NGC, this Premium Gem is the finest known for the die state, the variety, and the edge type. The satiny silver luster and bold design motifs shine through lovely blue-green and magenta toning that is nicely balanced on both sides. The surfaces are impeccable and smooth, with only one or two microscopic marks to be seen anywhere on the coin. This wonderful half dollar traces back to the 2006 George "Buddy" Byers Sale, a distinguished provenance to add the long list of positive attributes displayed by this eye-appealing example." Obtained from Heritage Galleries Platinum Night on April 24, 2014, Lot 5595.
