Owner's Description

General Comments: 1913 is a somewhat common date with a slight premium over other more common dates in Uncirculated. Usually available in all circulated grades, the date is surprisingly difficult to find in nice certified Mint State. 12 total Uncirculated coins have been graded at PCGS/NGC, yet these seem to be very slow in coming to the market. See below for discussion of With/Without "R". It is imperative to remember that NGC/PCGS coins labeled as simply "1913" often do have an "R". They do not pay close attention to this detail at the services. Minor varieties: 1. With "R" 2. Without "R" 3. o/o superscript o (FC) 4. Dot touching, or nearly touching superscript o (FC) 4. 1913/3 - Other Numerals May Be Repunched (FC) Distribution of With and Without "R" seems to be about equal for this date. The With-R coins have an extra small tuft of hair at the very base of Liberty's Bun; the Without-R lack this detail. The placement of "9" and "3" in the date can very slightly, and some repunched letters may be seen. Flatt lists all coins as having a small superscript o, however most appear, in my experience, to have a medium-large o. Was previously listed as $15 in UNC in the 2009 KM. While this date should have a small premium over more common dates, 45 is too high for an MS 60-62 coin. I would expect to pay 5-12 for a VF/XF, 20-25 for a low-end UNC, 35-50 for a certified MS 63/64 and 50 to 100 for a certified MS 65/66. Struck from well-used dies; considerable die polish lines populate the Obverse fields, while the reverse has some die rust granules. These as-made marks don't detract from the eye-popping luster and sharp strike. Tied with two others for second finest, one better in 66. Photo copyright PCGS
