Owner's Description

General Comments: This year has a unique pricing structure among the entire series. With a lack of small coin in the late 1860's, coins of this date were likely put to good use. Through VF, the coin is sometimes available. In XF, it's a better coin; in AU rare. A true Mint State coin may not exist, thus the price point explodes at that level. The most difficult coin in the series in true Uncirculated along with the 1885 Arequipa. Despite a couple varieties, the placement of the date is suprisingly uniform for an early date, always with downward sloping 1-8-6, and upward 9. Minor Varieties: 1. 1869/9 - A small buldge appears under the bottom left side of the loop of the 9. Reverse has short stem pointing at "E" in PERUANA. (FC) 2. Long Stem pointing at "E" in PERUANA (FC) 3. Short Stem pointing at "E" in PERUANA (FC) The only reported variety by Flatt comes with a short bar under the superscript o. I've seen some with slightly longer bars. As with all early dates, many different punches were used for the superscript o and bar below it, and attempting to quantify every type of placement is an exercise in exhaustion. Availability: G-VF: Somewhat Scarce XF: Scarce AU: Rare 60+: Exceedingly Rare, perhaps nonexistant Population Report (August 2016): NGC: One in 55 PCGS: None Graded Total at both services: 1; None in Uncirculated Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 1 VF: 1.50 XF: 2.25 Current KM: VF: 16 XF: 27 UNC: 200 KM Values for circulated coins are on target. Pricing of choice AU specimens is difficult given the lack of data, however 100 to 175 would seem appropriate. If an MS coin were certified, I'd expect multiple bidders to push the coin well beyond the 200 Krause price point. Auction Results: Ebay 10/13/2013 XFish $14.50 (WP) Ebay 5/14/2015 XF Crusty Spots 19.99 BIN Ebay 5/24/2015 2 Coins, Both Choice choice XF+ but with ugly toning. Auctions had poor photos. $8.74 each Ebay 2/14/2016 Very nice Raw 58 $145.50 - Starting bid was 86, I was surprised and saddened to get outbid at the high 130's level. I should have bid more. Ebay 5/15/2016 VF $28 (20 plus 8 shipping) Ebay 6/10/2016 Raw AU55ish with luster, possibly with light hairlines $24.80 - This was a German auction I unfortunately didn't see. Very cheap. Ebay 6/29/2016 Likely AU. Possible light hairlines? This coin had been on ebay for years, for $70+. I avoided it because the dealer called it XF and talked it down. In reality, it was likely a very nice coin for the money, and I regret not taking it at this price level. $42.99 Ebay 7/8/2016 Choice VF+ possibly lightly cleaned $20 Whittier Example - sold in a Heritage Lot in 2006 described by catalogers as AU-UNC. very minimal wear, could potentially be low-end UNC. Set Specimen: Very even dark toning, a bit lighter on reverse, covers mark free fields. Incipient iridescent toning glows beneath the patina. A handsome coin. Long stem at "E" in PERUANA. Finest and only graded. Photo copyright Numisor
