Owner's Description

General Comments: An underrated, fairly difficult date in all grades, very rare in true Mint State. Difficulty on par in UNC with the "Keys" 1893 and 1915 and underrated dates 1891 and 1896 TF. Perhaps only 1869 and 1895 are more difficult in Mint State. Minor Varities: 1. 9/9 2. 1890/88 #1 Reported by Flatt, #2 by KM. They are likely the same overdate. Some coins appear to have light repunching on "5 DE SOL". The overdate often features these diagnostics: Die crack through "A" in LA on Obverse, crack through "R" in PERUANA, "D" in "9 D" and "O" in FINO on reverse. The rim at 6 o'clock on the reverse sometimes wears into the date on even mid-grade coins. Availability: G-VF: Scarce - Generally only a couple offered in a given year XF-AU: Rare 60+: Very Rare Population Report (August 2016): NGC: One in 63 PCGS: None graded Total at both services: One; One in Uncirculated Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 6 VF: 10 XF: 17.50 Current KM: VF: 12 XF: 25 UNC: 47.50 Current KM 1890/88: VF: 15 XF: 30 UNC: 52.50 In circulated grades, the guide seems about accurate. Krause likes the 1891 better, but they are both equally difficult in UNC. It's quite possible no Gems exist. Sold in the proper venue, a certified 63/64 should bring over 200. KM gives a slight premium to the overdate, which isn't necessary. Almanzar/Seppa were right when they priced this date on par with 1893. Mintage: 85,000 Auction Results: Ebay 5/27/13 XF-AUish, perhaps lightly cleaned $11 (WP - Spanish auction, may have had high shipping costs, photo of reverse of coin is of a Bolivian coin) Ebay 8/11/14 Nice Choice VF 18.28 (I was the winner) Ebay 11/6/15 1890/90 Advertised as "Circulated" 1890/88. $83 (I could tell it was nice, won it and slabbed it. The Registry coin in 63.) Ebay 5/7/16 AUish Israel Seller $30 Ebay 5/9/16 VF Scratches $18.55 Karl Stephens Price list in 2010ish had an 1890 in BU for 45 when catalog value was also 45. This was very cheap for this coin, but the dealers go by the guide if they get one. I also remember seeing a raw UNC details (I believe it was likely cleaned) of this date put on ebay in early-mid 2014. The dealer asked $100 and got it immediately. The Whittier coin was sold in a 2006 Heritage Lot, and is also featured in a better photo as part of the Mountain Groan collection on the 1890 1/5 Sol Wikipedia page. Grade is likely low-end UNC. Set Specimen: A decidedly unusual coin. The obverse design is well brought up, with a deep purple hue over the entire side. The subdued luster is neither cartwheel nor reflective in nature; it just simmers beneath the strong toning. The reverse, a bit brighter, has unusual toning with what must be extensive die polish lines seen on the fields (but not devices). The surfaces on both sides are free of marks. An attractive coin if you're not a luster-freak. Finest and only graded.
