Owner's Description

1888 is the first year of the new type with "raised" Libertad (if you don't count the 1886 Proof). It's the only easily available date of the type, and can come extremely nice, and sometimes prooflike in Uncirculated. Overall, though, it's not as common a date like the 1866, 1906, or 1916. Minor Varities: 1. REPUB. 2. REPUB: Flatt had not seen the REPUB., but reports it was in the "Lima Listing". I have only seen REPUB:, and all superscript o's appear to be medium in size. Availability: G-VF: Somewhat Common XF-AU: Somewhat Common 60-62: Scarce 63-65: Scarce, but available on occassion 66-68: Scarce in general, but a small hoard of ultra premium coins was graded, so they do exist in this grade. But not seen this nice in the market raw. Population Report (Feb 2015): NGC: One in 61; One in 64; Three in 65; Two in 66; Four in 67; One in 68 PCGS: One in 50; One in 62; Two in 64; One in 65; Three in 66; One 68 Total at both services: 21; 20 in Uncirculated; 15 in Gem or better Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 1 VF: 1.50 XF: 3 Current KM: VF: 6 XF: 11 UNC: 22.50 KM prices are absolutely too low. See the auction results below. Although this is the most available of the four dates of this type, it's not overly available, and has interest as a type coin. I'd price this at VF/XF: $15 AU: $25 MS 62: $45 MS 65: $90 MS 66: $150 Mintage: 550,000 Auction Results: Ebay 3/16/2011 Choic XF $20 (WP) Ebay 3/18/2011 VF $16.50 (WP) Ebay 8/2/2012 VF $30.55 (WP) Ebay 12/25/2012 NGC MS 65 $149 (Nice white coin) (WP) Ebay 1/5/2013 PCGS MS 66 $150 (Great looking bright white coin) (WP) Ebay 5/12/2013 VF $11.50 (WP) Ebay 9/10/2013 VG/F Harsh Cleaning $25 (WP) Lissner Sale 8/2014 NGC 66 WINGS $726 Described "Gem prooflike lustrous BU with all the qualities of a gem proof. An amazing coin and highest graded." Either this was actually the 68, which makes sense given the hammer price, or they have a typo. Ebay 1/22/2015 Fine $15.98 Set Specimen: A fully lustrous Suburb Gem. Has the "fresh off the press" look. A solid 67, and what minimal chatter exists is well concealed. Some letters on the reverse are repunched and light clashing shows in the field. Tied with three others for second finest. One better at each of the services. An interesting note: This coin is part of a "mini-hoard" that was graded sometime between July 2001 and July 2003 (given the type of NGC holder). This lot of six 1888 1/5 Sols consisted of one in 64, one in 66, and four in 67. No other 1888's have been graded in MS 67 since, thus all in the market will be in the old-style holders.
