Owner's Description

Purchased on 8/27/2012. I can not find much information on this medal as struck in silver here. The American Numismatic Society does index this medal in copper as the following: CU Medal, Medallic Art Co., United States, Pennsylvania, 1776. 1976.268.1 Obverse Legend: THE JOURNEY THAT SHAPED AMERICA'S DESTINY|LEWIS|CLARK Obverse Type: Lewis and Clark atop hill, other figures behind Reverse Legend: MAH-DOOM-AY-NEEW-KEE-NEE-TSEE-TAH-BEE|THE FIRST ONES Reverse Type: Indian on horseback watching herd of buffalo ----------------------------------------- Upon further research, I believe this is a part of the 4 medal series called the "Montana Bicentennial Medal Series". This medal was the first of the series and is called: 1974 Lewis & Clark Medal MACo 1974-084-001 The other three issues were: 1974 Fur Trade Medal MACo 1974-084-002 1974 The Cattlemen Medal MACo 1974-084-003 1975 Only the Land Endures Medal MACo 1974-084-004 The medals were all designed by Frank Hagel, whose initials can be seen on the obverse at about 4 o'clock under the gentleman with the raised arm. The design of this medal is same as the copper one indexed as being from 1976 in the American Numismatic Society collection. Thus, I am still uncertain how many of the silver example were produced. HAGEL, Frank (1933-) painter, sculptor. Born Kalispell, Montana, 20 December 1933. Received art education prior to 1959. Commercial artist, Detroit: 1959-1970. Returned to Kalispell in 1970. Sculptor member of firm, Roche Jaune (“yellow stone” in French)
