Owner's Description

Purchased on 5/6/2012. Obverse: A Pony Express rider, one of a group of 80, the majority wiry teenagers, rides his hardy western mustang at full gallop to right. In the distance, rugged mountains suggest the hazards of snow-locked passes; in the foreground, a bleached skull and tumbleweed suggests the difficulties of desert passage. A parade of telegraph poles advances in the background, a new route of rapid communication which sounded the death-knell for the Pony after 19 short but dramatic months of operation. Legend above: PONY EXPRESS CENT; in exergue, 1960. Reverse: An authentic replica fo the special vaquero frame and separate “mochila”, a leather overskirt with four integral still leather “cantinas” – dispatch boxes – for rapid transfer at relay points. Above, a representation of the famous “running pony oval” postmark of San Francisco bearing the date Nov. 21, that of the last recorded trip in 1861. Legend surrounding: SACRAMENTO – ST. JOSEPH / 1966 MI. / 10 DAYS.
