Owner's Description

Purchased on 4/2/2012. ------------------------------------------------- The documentation that came with this commemorative issue said the following: "The Battle of Tippecanoe was one which probably need never have occurred, but once fought, was historically significant because it ended the recurring dream of an all-Indian confederation against the white man’s westward movement, and effectively ended Indian resistance in the entire Northwest Territory. Protagonists were William Henry Harrison, governor of Indiana Territory; Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief whose eloquence and nobility made his name popular for many white children of the period, and his visionary, demented brother, Tenskwatawa, “the Prophet”. If Tecumseh’s travels to rally all the tribes and his acceptance of British arms were threatening, the Indian had excuse enough to fear the forced treaties which continually ate away hunting grounds. If Harrison’s march from Vincennes was provocative, the settlers had fresh memories of the bloody Ohio massacres; if the resulting victory was not really justification for the popular acclaim which led to the presidency, at least Harrison had his entire camp up and ready long before dawn. If the Prophet’s treacherous, headlong attack dissipated Tecumseh’s buildup of arms, warriors and corn to no avail, he felt little choice with Harrison’s superior forces camped at his doorstep.
